Bitcoin Canvas

Bitcoin Canvas · FAQ

Questions, answered properly.

Bitcoin first, then the app, then the boring but important parts. Nothing here is financial advice.

Bitcoin, explained

The questions people actually ask before and after they buy their first Bitcoin. Plain answers, no cheerleading.

What is Bitcoin, in one paragraph?

Bitcoin is digital money that nobody controls. It runs on a public network of computers that all keep the same ledger, and the rules of that ledger, including how many coins will ever exist, are enforced by software rather than by a bank or a government. You can hold it yourself, send it to anyone with an internet connection, and verify every transaction that has ever happened.

Why does Bitcoin exist?

It was created in 2009, in the wake of the financial crisis, to answer a specific problem: every form of money before it required trusting an institution to keep honest books and not print more. Bitcoin replaces that trust with math and open code. Its supply schedule was fixed on day one and cannot be changed by anyone, which is the property that makes everything else about it interesting.

Where does Bitcoin's value come from?

From the same place any money's value comes from: people agreeing to use it, backed by properties that make that agreement rational. Bitcoin is scarce (21 million coins, ever), divisible, portable across borders in minutes, impossible to counterfeit, and impossible for any government to freeze at the network level. Its price is what the market decides those properties are worth today. That number moves a lot, which is a feature of a young asset and a risk you should understand.

What does "digital gold" mean?

Gold has been money for thousands of years because it is scarce, durable, and nobody can make more of it on demand. Bitcoin has those properties in digital form, plus ones gold lacks: you can verify it instantly, move it anywhere, divide it to eight decimal places, and store any amount without a vault. The digital-gold thesis is that Bitcoin becomes the store of value for a digital world the way gold was for a physical one. It is a thesis, not a guarantee.

Why is the supply capped at 21 million?

Because scarcity is the point. New Bitcoin is issued to miners on a fixed schedule that cuts in half roughly every four years, an event called the halving. Around 95% of all Bitcoin has already been mined; the last fraction will trickle out over the next century. No committee can vote to issue more. The app's Network dashboard shows circulating supply and the countdown to the next halving.

What is the halving and why do people care?

Every 210,000 blocks, about every four years, the reward miners receive for securing the network is cut in half. That halves the rate of new supply entering the market. Historically, halvings have preceded major price cycles, though past patterns are not promises. The next one is estimated for 2028, and the app counts down to it in blocks.

Who controls Bitcoin?

No one, and everyone. Thousands of independent nodes run the software and reject any transaction or block that breaks the rules. Miners compete to add blocks. Developers propose changes, but nothing takes effect unless the people running nodes choose to adopt it. That is why the supply cap has never changed in fifteen years.

Is Bitcoin safe?

The network itself has never been hacked; the cost of attacking it is measured in millions of dollars per hour, and the app shows that number live. The risks are around it: losing your keys, trusting an exchange that fails, falling for a scam, or buying more than you can afford to watch fall 30%. Bitcoin Canvas is built to reduce the first three by making you better informed and never touching your coins.

Why is the price so volatile?

Bitcoin trades 24 hours a day, globally, with a fixed supply and demand that swings with news, interest rates, ETF flows and sentiment. A 5% day is normal. A 20% week happens. Volatility has fallen as the asset has grown, but if you cannot tolerate large swings, you should hold less. The app exists to explain the swings, not to predict them.

What is self-custody, and do I need it?

Self-custody means you hold the private keys to your Bitcoin, so no exchange or company can lose or freeze them. It is the most sovereign way to hold Bitcoin and also the one where mistakes are permanent. Many people start on an exchange and move to self-custody as their holdings grow. Bitcoin Canvas works with both: connect an exchange read-only, or watch your own on-chain address.

What are ETFs and why do they matter for Bitcoin?

Spot Bitcoin ETFs let people buy Bitcoin exposure through an ordinary brokerage account. Since they launched, they have become one of the largest holders of Bitcoin and one of the biggest daily sources of buying and selling pressure. When you see the price move with no obvious news, ETF flows are often the reason. The app tracks total assets, total BTC held, and daily flows per fund.

How do interest rates and inflation affect Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is priced in dollars, so what happens to the dollar matters. When rates rise, cash earns more and risk assets tend to fall. When money supply expands, hard assets tend to benefit. The Macro dashboard tracks M2 money supply, CPI, the Fed funds rate, the 10-year Treasury yield and the dollar index next to Bitcoin so you can see the relationship instead of guessing at it.

What is hashrate and why is it a health signal?

Hashrate is the total computing power miners are pointing at the network. Higher hashrate means it costs more to attack Bitcoin and that miners are confident enough to keep investing. A sharp, sustained drop would be a warning sign. The Network dashboard shows it over 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days.

Is Bitcoin the same as crypto?

Bitcoin is one asset with one job: being the hardest money ever made. "Crypto" is a category of thousands of tokens with different goals, teams and risk profiles. Bitcoin Canvas covers Bitcoin only, on purpose.

Should I buy Bitcoin?

That is your decision and nobody in this app will make it for you. Penny, the newsroom and every dashboard explain what is happening and what it has meant historically. None of it is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold.

The app

Everything Bitcoin Canvas does, feature by feature.

What is Bitcoin Canvas?

A free app for iOS and Android that explains Bitcoin to the people who hold it. It combines live market, on-chain, ETF, macro and adoption data with Penny, an AI Bitcoin analyst, an AI newsroom, narrated daily briefs, and a private view of your own Bitcoin. The goal is to be the one place a holder needs for every Bitcoin data point, with the meaning attached.

Who is it for?

People who own Bitcoin, or are about to, and want to understand it rather than just watch a number. It is written for beginners and early holders first, but the dashboards go deep enough for people who have been here a while.

Who is Penny?

Penny is the app's AI Bitcoin analyst. Ask her anything about Bitcoin, today's move, a term you do not understand, or what a headline means, and she answers in plain English grounded in the day's data. When a chart helps, it appears inside the chat. She will never tell you to buy or sell.

What is on the Home screen?

Your Daily Bitcoin Brief, a live Bitcoin price with candlestick charts you can switch between short-term (15-minute, 1-hour, 4-hour) and long-term (daily, weekly, monthly) views, your BTC goal progress, a Bitcoin versus Gold and S&P 500 comparison, and a Price Action deep dive.

What is the Daily Bitcoin Brief?

A short written brief each morning covering what moved, why, and what it means for a holder. It appears on Home and in your Penny chat, and a narrated version is available in Listen mode.

What are the five dashboards?

Price Action: candles, RSI, MACD, support and resistance, volume, and a written read of what the indicators agree on. Macro: M2 money supply, CPI, Fed funds rate, 10-year Treasury yield, DXY and the S&P 500. ETFs and Treasuries: total assets, total BTC held, daily and weekly flows, per-fund detail including IBIT and GBTC, and the companies and governments holding Bitcoin. Network and On-chain: hashrate, average fee, block height, circulating supply, blocks to the next halving, 51% attack cost, node count, Lightning capacity, and long-term-holder behaviour. Adoption: addresses with balance, news mentions, Fear and Greed, Google Trends, sentiment, and adoption by region. Every dashboard has an audio brief and a two-line take from Penny.

What is the AI Newsroom?

Bitcoin news written across five beats by five named AI reporters: Price, Macro, ETFs and Treasuries, Network and On-chain, and Adoption and Culture. Stories update through the day, run about two minutes, end with a "why it matters" section, and link their sources so you can check any claim. Every article says it was written by AI.

What is Listen mode?

Narrated audio for the daily brief and for each dashboard, so you can hear the day's read instead of reading it. Built for the commute and the gym.

What can I track in My Bitcoin?

Four ways to add holdings. Exchange account: connect Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX or KuCoin with a read-only API key and balances sync automatically. On-chain wallet: watch an address or xpub and the balance scans itself. Bitcoin ETF: enter shares held in IBIT, FBTC and others and the app tracks the Bitcoin they represent. Manual: type a balance and update it yourself. Your total shows in BTC and dollars.

Can the app move or trade my Bitcoin?

No. Exchange connections require a read-only key, and the app checks the key is read-only before saving it. Read-only means it can see balances and history and can never place a trade, withdraw or transfer. On-chain wallets are watch-only; you never enter a private key or seed phrase anywhere in Bitcoin Canvas.

How are my exchange credentials protected?

They are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM and only ever hold read-only permissions. You can disconnect an exchange at any time from My Bitcoin.

What is the BTC accumulation goal?

Set a target amount of Bitcoin and a date. The app shows your progress as you add to your stack, and celebrates milestones along the way.

Can I log my buys and sells?

Yes. Add transactions to a wallet with the amount, price and date, and the app keeps the running balance and history.

Are there courses?

Yes. Short Bitcoin courses with videos and quizzes take you from the basics to confident holder at your own pace, with achievements as you complete them.

What alerts and notifications are there?

Price alerts, the daily brief, goal progress, and achievements. You can manage each in Settings.

Which exchange is the price from?

Coinbase by default, with Binance, Kraken, OKX and KuCoin available in Settings. The exchange in use is labelled on the chart.

Does the app support other currencies?

Prices are shown in US dollars, with additional currencies supported in Settings.

Is the data live?

Price and chart data stream live. Dashboards and on-chain metrics refresh on their own schedules, and every dashboard shows when it was last updated. Market data may be delayed, and nothing in the app should be treated as a trading signal.

Free and Pro

Is Bitcoin Canvas free?

Yes. Download it, ask Penny, read the newsroom, hear the daily brief, use Home and the Price Action dashboard, take the courses, and track a wallet manually, all free.

What does Pro add?

The other four dashboards (Macro, ETFs and Treasuries, Network and On-chain, Adoption), and the automatic tracking options in My Bitcoin: exchange accounts, on-chain wallets, and ETF shares.

Is there a free trial?

No trial timer and no card required to start. The free tier is the free tier. Upgrade to Pro when and if you want more.

How do I cancel Pro?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple or Google. Cancel any time from your App Store or Google Play subscription settings; you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.

Privacy and security

What data does the app collect?

Your account details, the holdings and transactions you add or connect, and anonymous usage analytics that help us improve the app. We do not sell your data. The full policy is on the Privacy page.

Does anyone see my holdings?

Your holdings are yours. They are used to personalise your brief and your goal progress, and they are never shared or sold.

How do I delete my account?

From Settings inside the app, or from the Delete account page on this site. Deletion removes your account and the holdings you added.

Is Penny's advice reliable?

Penny is an AI. She is good at explaining and careful about sources, and she can still be wrong. Nothing she says is financial advice. Check the linked sources on any claim that would change a decision.

What's next

Where Bitcoin Canvas is going. Planned, not promised, and in roughly this order.

What is coming to the app?

A daily podcast: five to seven minutes, every day at 4:20 PM, hosted by Penny with a rotating correspondent from the beat with the day's biggest story, humour included. Cost-basis and cash-out planning inside My Bitcoin. Deeper on-chain metrics. More ways to hold and track.

What is Daily BTC News?

A free public website carrying the newsroom's coverage across all five beats, with the daily podcast, so the explanations reach people before they have the app.

Will Penny be on the web?

Yes. A scripted preview of Penny is coming to bitcoincanvas.app so you can see how she talks before you download. The full Penny lives in the app.

Is a 3D Penny happening?

It is in progress. A 3D Penny who can wave, blink, smile and walk you through the app is being built for both the website and the app.

What is the long-term vision?

One stop for every Bitcoin data point a holder could want, with the meaning attached and a guide who explains it. The ultimate Bitcoin tracker, built for understanding rather than trading.

Still curious? Ask Penny.

The app is free. No card, no trial clock.
